Fred W. Thome of Spring Valley died Saturday, June 13, at United Hospitals, St. Paul, at the age of 91 years and 11 months.
He was born in 1889 in the area known as the German Settlement east of Hudson on Highway N, the son of Nick thome and Mary Schwalen. As a young man he worked in logging camps in the area east of Ladysmith for the Weyerhauser company. He then attended the University of Wisconsin for two years.
He married Mary E. Prock Oct. 10, 1916 and began farming in the Dobie area northeast of Rice Lake. In 1921 he moved his family to the Roberts area and farmed several farms before moving to the Deer Park area where he continued to farm. He then moved to Hammond where he worked with Charlie Detwyler in the machinery repair shop until that business was sold.
The family moved to Spring Valley in 1938. He worked for Bill Grab and later bought the business. Thereafter, he was the "Village Blacksmith" for Spring Valley and the surrounding area. In 1956, he purchased the present family home on the corner of Glade and First street in Spring Valley.
Survivors are his widow, Mary of Spring Valley; his 10 children: Michael Thome of Sacramento, Calif., Mrs. Leonard (Marie) Hisdahl of St. Paul, Margaret Thome of St. Paul, Fred W. Thome, Jr., of Milwaukee, Mrs. Jowell (Antoninette) Wise of Malibu, Calif., Sister Alice Thome of Mantiowoc, Mrs. James (Dorothy) Zoch of St. Paul, Joseph Thome of Port Washington, Kathryn Ann Peterson of Eagan, Minn., Maebell Thome of Chippewa Falls; a brother, Raymond of New Richmond; 19 grandchildren; seven great grandchildren.
He had been in declining health for the past few years, and was cared for by his wife and daughter, Sister Alice Thome, of Hold Family Convent, Manitowoc.
Visitation was Monday at the Keehr Funeral Home in Spring Valley, with Rosary Monday evening. Mass of Christian Burial was Tuesday, June 16, at the Sacred Heart Catholic church, Spring Valley. Rev. Edwin B. Klimaszewski and Rev. Msgr. Michael Prock were the officiating clergymen. Miss Margie Hanson was organist for the church choir.
Burial was in the Sacred Heart Catholic cemetery, Spring Valley. Pallbearers were grandsons: David Hisdahl, Paul Hisdahl, Richard Zoch, James Thome, Brian Peterson and Carter Peterson. Honorary bearers were grandsons, Michael and John Wise.
