Hudson's Handy Fire Department
The Hudson Fire Department is co-exixtant in its history with that if our little city and has always been an important factor in public affairs, as the company has included in its membership many of the leading citizens, now as well as in all the years past. The company has numbered among the chiefs such well known people as Joseph H. Harring, Wm. B. Hatch, Frank D. Harding, Eugene Lombard, James Penman and the men now in active control of the department. The company has a comfortable hall and for many years maintained a very creditable library and have always had at least one banquet a year, when they and the city administration in power might meat together around the festal board to discuss matters for the best interests of the department. The company now boasts a membership of about fifteen, who receive no pay except the per diem for actual attendance in time of a fire.
Mr. Andrew Sangsland, the present Chief Engineer of the Fire Department, is one of the best known young business men of this city, having been engaged in the flour and feed business, upon Second street for several years. He was born in Christiansand, Norway, about forty-one years ago; came to Hudson with his parents in 1882, and was employed for a long time in the Hudson Furniture factory, since when he has been engaged in trade for himself, part of the time with his brother Nels Sangsland, who is now janitor at the Court House. Mr. Sangsland has been connected with the fire department of the city for about five years, two years of time being foreman and now in full charge. He has the interest of the company thorougly at heart, and desires that every member of the company shall so acquaint himself asto render honorable service to the whole city. He is doing all he can to have the fire alarm system and all of the appliances of the company put in first class shape. Mr. Sangsland is an excellent man for Chief and should have the co-operation of all our citizens. He is one of the most influential of our young Scandinavian-Americans, and stands well with all classes of people.
