Grant L. Burton
Grant L. Burton, 73, formerly of Burkhardt, died Saturday, April 15, at United Hospital in St. Paul after an extended illness. He was admitted to the St. Paul hospital in early March.
He was born in Viscount, Sask., Canada, March 21, 1916, the son of Fred and Myrtle (Leigh) Burton.
After attending schools in Canada, he came to the United States with his parents.
On July 6, 1939, in Cresco, Iowa, he was married to Melta A. Vick.
The Burtons farmed in the Burkhardt area for a time. Later he became associated with the Burkhardt Cooperative, and was its store manager until his retirement in 1982, when he and his wife moved to Hudson. He was affectionately known to his friends and customers alike as "Mr. Co-op" because of his loyalty to the Burkhardt Co-op.
He was an avid fisherman and was well acquainted with all the special fishing holes on the Willow River near Burkhardt.
He was the assistant chief of the St. Joseph Township Fire Department.
Surviving are his wife, Meta; three sons, James, Gregory and Ronald, all of Hudson; a daughter, Sharon (Mrs. Jerry Manula) of St. Louis, Mo.; nine grandchildren and one great-grandchild; four sisters, Nena Hoeprich of Colorado, Vivian Titel of Burkhardt, Evelyn Lucas of Canada and Pearl Torgerson (Mrs. Robert S.) of Stillwater, and two brothers, Donald of Canada and Ted of Aurora, Minn.
Services were Tuesday, April 18 at the Church of the Holy Cross in rural Hudson. Interment was in Willow River Cemetery.
