(23 Apr 1906 - 2 May 2005)
HSO, 12 May 2005, p22A
Olga Jenny Johnson, 99Friday, May 13, 2005 Olga Jenny Johnson, 99, of Amery, and formerly of Hudson and Baldwin, died Monday, May 2, at the Golden Age Manor in Amery.
She was born April 23, 1906, in Snerting Dalen, Norway, to Thorvold Jostad. When she was 15 months old, her parents immigrated to the United States, settling near Kindred, N.D. The journey to America took three weeks.
Her father, a carpenter by trade, found work in Wyndmere, N.D., making it necessary to return home weekends only, traveling the 28 miles by bicycle.
She entered school at the age of 6 years old and had to learn English because she only spoke Norwegian. She continued her schooling through the eighth grade and then went to work as a domestic.
Later she came to Hudson, where a cousin lived, and found work keeping house at $3.50 a week.
On March 27, 1928, she was married to Adolph Gustaf Johnson at Zion Lutheran Church in Hudson. Her husband was employed by the Chicago Northwestern Railroad.
She enjoyed fishing, gardening and cooking and returned to North Dakota, using a free railroad pass, on a yearly basis to visit relatives and to speak her native Norwegian language. She also liked quilting, weaving, braiding rugs and playing cards.
In Hudson, the family lived at 1208 Second St. for many years.
She was active in the ladies organizations of her church. In her later years, while a resident of Golden Age Manor in Amery, she took part in the group activities.
Survivors are a son, Gerald Allen (Linda Appleton) Johnson of Amery; 12 grandchildren, 27 great-grandchildren and nine great-great-grandchildren; two sisters, Ellen Nygard and Mildred Rekken, both of Fargo, N.D.; and a brother, Maynard Jorstad of California.
Preceding her in death were her husband, Adolph Johnson, in 1981; a son, Richard Eugene Johnson, in 1967; a daughter, Lorraine K. (Johnson) Erickson Heebink, in 1989; and two grandchildren, Jamie Lyn Johnson, in 1977 and Larry Dean Heebink, in 1963.
The funeral service was at 11 a.m. Friday, May 6, at the O’Connell Family Funeral Home in Hudson with the Rev. Norris Erdal officiating and Kari Weiss playing organ.
Burial was in Willow River Cemetery in Hudson where Joel Heebink, Loren Heebink, Jeffrey Johnson, Jason Johnson, Tom Weber and Leo Diehl were casketbearers.
