J.E. Stanton, son of Ebert and Grace Stanton, was born in the Hazny or
Blackfoot area on July 5, 1925. Eleen May Hawkinson, daughter of Carl and
Lucille Hawkinson, was born in Butte Creek area on February 9, 1927. They both
lived in a log cabin with a dirt roof out in the country in early years,
farming mostly in order to make a living. Times were hard then, most families
only had one vehicle if any and most of the time you couldn't afford shoes so
you had to go barefoot. They both went to school in a log school house. Eleen
walked and J.E. rode an old horse called "Old See." They've known each other
since they were kids and in later years they both moved to town. Their parents
went into business together and ran the Miles City Stage, a mail route from
Jordan to Miles City. For fun, Eleen went to school and played games, while
J.E. drank whiskey and played cards. J.E.'s favorite memory was one Fourth of
July when he and his cousin Glenn were throwing fire crackers to the chickens.
They both got in a lot of trouble! J.E. and Eleen were married in the Lutheran
Church in Miles City, April 2, 1946. After they were wed, J.E. farmed and
drove truck, while Eleen worked in an insurance office and at Foster Drug.

was born 1 Aug 1867 in Athens, Tennessee. He moved to Missouri as a young man
where he married Ellen Guffey of Holden, Missouri. All six of their children
were born in Missouri: daughters Ida and Hattie, and sons Ebert, Ray, Niles and
Irl. Irl died in 1944.
