Leslie Robert Lindstrom, 70, of Houlton died Friday, Dec. 26, at Lakeview Hospital in Stillwater, Minn., where he was a patient for only one day.
He was born Feb. 15, 1927, in the town of St. Joseph, St. Croix County, the son of Arthur L. and Myrtle M. (Wolf) Lindstrom, and attended McKinley country school in the town of St. Joseph.
He graduated in 1944 from Hudson High School, where he was active in athletics, including boxing, track, football and baseball.
For 40 years he was employed at the Andersen Corp. in Bayport, retiring in 1988.
Though he held a full-time job at Andersen's, he managed to conduct a successful and prosperous sod business for 42 years from his farm. His sod-laying was known throughout the area for its high-quality material and expert workmanship. He was known to everyone as "the sod man" whose motto was "Green Side Up." His newspaper advertising portrayed his sly humorous nature when he used the catchy, tongue-in-check phrase, "He's eary to get a lawn with."
Hunting, traveling and family events were among his enjoyments.
He was married in Stillwater Aug. 20, 1947, to Anna Lou Rivard, and they were divorced in 1988. She died in 1989.
Survivors are five sones, David (friend Carol Laitala) of Somerset, Randy (Susan) of Hudson, Daniel G. of Polk County, James (friend Jerri Cook) of Hudson and John A. (Karen) of Baldwin; four daughters, D'Ann (Joseph) Dulon of Hudson, Bonnie (Ken) Parent of Somerset, Debra L. (Cary) Brown of Texas and Mary Beth (Todd) Johnson of Houlton; his personal friend, Deloris Dahl; a brother, Dean (Linda) Lindstrom of Hudson; a sister, Maxine (Florian) Weckworth of Hudson; and 20 grandchildren.
Preceeding him in death were his parents and a brother, Donald Arthur, who died in 1989.
Services were at 11 a.m. Tuesday, Dec. 30, at Trinity Lutheran Church in Stillwater. Visitation was Monday, Dec. 29, from 4 to 8 p.m. at the church and one hour prior to the church service.
Burial was in Willow River Cemetery in Hudson.
