In 1708, Walter began to act with power of attorney for his brother Charles Pye. He registered a cattle mark in July 1715 in Charles Co., MD. He was appointed Surveyor General of the Western Shore just before July 1716 by Lord Baltimore. Gov. Hart refused to recognize this appointment due to Walter's Catholic faith. Walter and wife Margaret deeded land on Beeches Neck 9 Mar 1736/37, of which he had been granted a patent on 17 Sep 1715. He deeded more land in Charles Town on 22 Mar 1748/49. His will has not been found.

Mike Marshall has suggested that I post this to the St. Mary's County list. This is correspondence between Mike and me that started out as a discussion of the Neale and Brooke families and ended up with the Pyes. Since this affects Charles County as well, I'm posting to both lists. It involves the identity of Henrietta Pye, widow of John Pye, who died in Charles County in 1775.
Corrections, additions, etc., appreciated.

Mike,
I'm confused. What Henrietta Neale married Basil Hemsley and Charles Pye?
It can't be Henrietta, wife of Basil Brooke (d. 1767) as Henrietta died as a Brooke in 1774.

Hi Mike,
Any further thoughts? I think I've figured it out. When you get to the dotted line below is where I finally started being able to put it together.
6/7/1769: Admin. accts. of Henry Brent, Charles Co. NOK: Henrietta Pye, Ann Pye.
I believe that the Ann Neale listed in 1775 as NOK in the admin. accts. of Henrietta Pye was the wife of Gerard Neale (widower of Elizabeth Guibert). Ann's second husband was Roger Brooke.
11/25/1778: Gerard Neale's final acct. Acct. of Roger Brooke and Ann, his wife, Admx. of Gerard Fowke (should say Neale). Refers to inventory on 10/25/1773; Ann was Admin. de bonis non of Richard Neale. Refers to debt listed 1/3/1772 to Dr. Joseph Adderton for medicines to Walter Neale, son-in-law to the deceased. Securities: Jesse Matthews and Walter Pye. Representatives: The widow and Joseph Neale, son to the deceased, 7 years old last March 19. (Charles Co. Probate Rec., 1777-1780).
My belief is that Ann Neale, NOK of Henrietta Pye, was her sister and not a child. It appears that Ann Pye was not of age at the time of John Pye's will.
Will of John Pye, Charles Co., 3/24/1772-6/25/1772. Children: Mary, Margaret, Ann, Charles, Edward. Execs. and guardians to children: Wife, Henrietta and Walter Pye. In case of the death of the named Execs., Walter Neale and Rappo Neale, Jr., son of William of Port Tobacco. Wit: Matthew Campbell, Pearson Chapman, Peter Davis.
The will of Henrietta Pye names her sister, Mary Pye and leaves her 10 lbs. sterling to take care of Henrietta's youngest daughter, Elizabeth. Then we have the will of Mary Pye. So this begs the question, was Henrietta born a Pye and married one too?
Will of Mary Pye, Charles Co., 11/12/1782-1/18/1783. Niece: Elizabeth Pye, 2 negroes named Nace and Joe and my silver buckles. To: Rev. Ignatius Matthews, half of the proceeds from the sale of my other Negro named Len to distribute among the poor and the other half to use as he pleases. Niece: Margaret Simms, my horse and saddle; bed and chest; my mourning ring; the tobacco that Spalding owes me if I don't make use of it in my lifetime; and whatever part of my wearing apparel she chooses; whatever I have left Mrs. Simms may not be appraised in my estate. To: Miss Ann Philpott, the tobacco that widow Kerrick and the widow Thomas owe me if I don't make use of it during my lifetime. Exec: Mr. Joseph Simms. Wit: Joseph Matthews, Agnes Walsh.
I have this Mary Pye as the daughter of Walter Pye and Margaret Tant.
Thinking as I'm writing, but I think maybe I've "cracked the code." Henrietta Pye, widow of John Pye, was born a Pye. She was the daughter of Walter Pye and Margaret Tant.
Henry Brent's mother was named Jane. His father was William Brent who died by 5/21/1747.
5/21/1747: Admin. accts. of William Brent, Charles Co. Sureties: Walter Pye, Jacob Clements. Exec: Jane Brent.
I believe that Jane, widow of William Brent, was Jane Pye, daughter of Walter Pye and Margaret Tant. Walter Pye died by 11/28/1752 and his admin. accts. don't give us the names of his children, but there were eight, 7 of whom were of age. Walter Pye, as you've undoubtedly noticed, was one of the securities for the estate of William Brent.
11/28/1752: Admin. accts. of Walter Pye, Charles Co. Sureties: William Hanson, Samuel Hanson. Representatives: widow, 8 children (7 of of age) and Robert Pye (aged 18). Adm: Sarah Pye (Exec. of Edward Pye, adm. of deceased).
Children of Walter Pye and Margaret Tant:
1. Jane Pye was one of the children as the will of Mark Lampton III dated 10/25/1733 devises to his cousin, Jane Pye his riding horse. (Mark Lampton III was the son of Mark Lampton, Jr. and Ann Tant, sister of Margaret).
2. Edward Pye, son of Walter Pye and Margaret Pye died in 1750. Will of Edward Pye, Charles Co., 6/10/1750-7/16/1750. Wife: Sarah, Exec. I give up admin. of my father's estate to my mother and sister, Margaret. Remainder of estate to be divided among my three children: Elizabeth, Margaret, and Walter Pye. Wit: John Ensey, James Grant.
3. Margaret Pye. Named in the will of her brother Edward. According to Ms. Donnelly, Margaret Pye, b. 1724, entered the Carmelites at Antwerp; professed on 10/10/1752 as Sister Mary Magdalen of St. Joseph; and died 6/7/1777 at Antwerp.
4. Walter Pye, Jr. was named in the will of his grandmother, Margaret (Bloomfield) Tant in 1725. He was living as late as 1786. He was named in the will of John Pye, Henrietta's husband, as one his Execs. and guardian to his children.
5. Mary Pye. Named in the will of her sister, Henrietta to care for daughter, Elizabeth Pye. See Mary's will above, 1783.
6. Ms. Donnelly says there was a son named James Pye. When I looked back at the will of Mark Lampton, I note that Maryland Calendar of Wills says to cousin, James Pye. I think this is an error and it should be Jane. A look at the actual will would be in order. There is no mention anywhere else of a person named James Pye.
7. Henrietta Pye. Already discussed.
8. Robert Pye. The youngest child and the only one named in his father's administration accounts.
If you eliminate James Pye, that leaves only 7 children accounted for and I think this is where Ann, wife of Gerard Neale and Roger Brooke comes in. She's Ann Pye.
Thoughts?
Linda
