Emigration	30 Nov 1852	from London aboard the "Eliza" along with 330 fellow emigrants. He arrived in Portland, Victoria 9 Apr 1853
Note	1854	According to his obituary in the Border Morning mail 12 Jul 1910, Edward spent a few years after his arrival on a cattle station and at mining the Avoca alluvial diggings. Around 1856 he accepted an appointment with the Education Department as a teacher, a career he would pursue successfully for 37 years. The obituary also supports his arrival in the colony aboard the "Eliza" even though the passenger list for the ship states that he was a 22 year old schoolmaster from Somerset, England

Note	1860	According to an interview with Edward's grandson Dr John Bothroyd, Edward "was 5ft 10ins, strongly built, and weighed about 17 stone. He was fair with blue eyes. He was headmaster of the Yarra Park State School which was closed last year. He was a very good cabinet maker ... When you visited him, he would put half-crowns down the chairs and see if you could find them". He also noted that "it was a strict Presbyterian home - you couldn't whistle on Sundays, except hymns, or read any books unless about religion. There was a question in the catechism 'Why am I a protestant?' and the answer was 'Because I protest against the errors of Rome"
