News Pub (ind)9 Apr 1863the Kilmore Examiner reported: "Two-Men Drowned-On Monday last,an inquest was held at Seymour, before D. N. Nicolson, Esq., coroner for the district, on the body of a man named Smale, who had been drowned in the Goulburn River on the day before. A verdict of " Accidental death" was returned. A constable named Robert Strahan was also drowned, whose body was not found on Monday. It appears the constable brought a prisoner out of the lock-up to empty the night-tub which being done, the prisoner bolted and swam across tho Goulburn, Strahan following ; Çonstable Deasy having joined in the pursuit, succeeded in arresting the prisoner. Constable Strahan would not wait for the boat to recross the river, but went into Smale's dray, which was crossing at the ford. The horses, however, by some means got into deep water, and both they and the men were drowned. The body of the constable had since been found"
