Lewnidas Athanasios Eftaxias
(9 Sep 1914 - 14 May 1985)
Lewnidas' son, Peter Eftaxias to Carol Petranek, November 24, 2015:
Lewnidas was left an orphan after his mother died when he was about 4 years old. At age ??, he went to Athens and becaame good friends with Panagiotis Kerasiotis. After the war, they were asked to operate the airport in Athens. Lewnidas was married with a wife and child in Magoula; he said no and returned to Mistra where he had a wife and child. Kerasiotis operated the airport and became very wealthy. Leonidas emigrated to Canada in 1956.
Peter's father said the original spelling of the name was Eftaxas and that the family originated in Kalamata. He said the name changed because the Ottomans tried to wipe out history books and convert people to Muslim; the name was changed when a clerk recorded it in a register.
Story that Peter Eftaxias told to Carol Petranek, April 20, 2017: My father and a friend hid in Anavriti when the Germans were bombing Sparta during World War II. They found a secluded place in the ruins of an old church. Despite all the destruction, Peter's friend, Papagoranitis found an icon of the Virgin Mary in perfect condition - even the glass was not broken. He swore that if he lived, he would rebuild the church. In a trip to Greece in 1968 or 1969, Peter took a box of cigars to give to Papagoranitis. Peter rode a donkey up the trail from Agios Ioannis to Anavriti. He found that Papagoranitis had rebuilt the church almost like a monastery.
