Events

Birth1791Dumfries, Dumfries, Scotland, Great Britain
Baptism17 Apr 1791St Michael's Parish Church, Dumfries, Dumfries, Scotland, Great Britain
Marriage4 Dec 1812and the church record describes it as an "irregular" marriage which suggests that they had been living as husband and wife but the church had now recognised it (often with a fine to the couple). This was not unusual in Scotland. Eldest son John was about 14 months old and Margaret was probably pregnant with Jannet - New Abbey, Kirkcudbright, Scotland, United Kingdom - Margaret IRELAND
Emigration (fam)14 Sep 1840on board the "Brothers" with wife Margaret and children Jannet, Robert, William & Mary. They arrived in Port Jackson 11 Mar 1841. Jannet & Mary travelled under the Smith name even though their surnames were properly Boland or Bolling - Liverpool, Lancashire, England, United Kingdom - Margaret IRELAND
Note6 Jan 1841This voyage was not without its difficulties. The ship lost the boatswain overboard in one incident. They put into the Cape and ended up staying for 3 weeks, thus extending the voyage. Around 6 jan 1841, while still in the Cape, 7 seamen refused to obey the command of the captain & they were tried and found guilty in Sydney on 13 Apr 1841 after the ship reached port
Occupation11 Mar 1841mechanic (according to the ship's manifest) but the family described him as an Iron Moulder. However a number of brass objects handed down in Antony Ivansmith's family would suggest that he had worked in a brass foundry, perhaps as a moulder
