| Birth | Abt 1785 | (when she emigrated Margaret gave Castle Douglas as her birth place, however it didn't exist until 1792. Given that her Death Cert gives her birthplace as Carleton Hill I believe that the most likely village of her birth was in Kelton Hill, scene of the Kelton Hill Fair, the largest horse and cattle fair in Scotland, which was the name of the village of Rhonehouse at the time) - Kelton Hill, Castle Douglas, Kirkcudbright, Scotland, Great Britain | | | |
| Note | 1786 | On her immigration record Margaret gives her father as William Alison & mother Janet McMurray. Her Death Cert recorded that she was the daughter of Alexander Ireland & Janet McMurray which has created quite a lot of confusion for family historians of this family. We can be fairly sure that her mother was Janet McMurray or McMorrin which is the maiden name recorded on the baptisms of Margaret’s two youngest siblings, James and Mary. As to William Alison vs Alexander Ireland there were certainly many Irelands in the area at the time but few, if any, Alisons. Most historians have gone with the Ireland lineage and so have I but we should bear in mind that a grand-daughter was named Margaret Alison Smith by Margaret's son William and also that her son John completed the death certificate (husband William had pre-deceased her) & may well have been mistaken | | | |
| Marriage | 4 Dec 1812 | and the church record describes it as an "irregular" marriage which suggests that they had been living as husband and wife but the church had now recognised it (often with a fine to the couple). This was not unusual in Scotland. Eldest son John was about 14 months old and Margaret was probably pregnant with Jannet - New Abbey, Kirkcudbright, Scotland, United Kingdom - William John SMITH | | | |
