Note1854He served in the Crimea War (1854/6) & was killed in the China War (1856/60) according to Sydney Ross Smith but this is totally unsubstantiated & according to his brother John he was still alive in 1875 when his mother died. Anthony Ivansmith thought he may have emigrated to Australia. Have found a Private Alexander Smith who served in the Crimea (#4036 in the 14th Foot Regiment). This bloke was medically discharged 23 Oct 1856 in Mullingar Barracks, Westmeath, Ireland due to deafness in both ears caused by typhus fever picked up while carrying timber from the ruins of Sebastopol
Note1863A Chelsea Pensioner in NZ, 27th Regiment of Foot, was being paid his pension through to 1878 but I can't see his death anywhere in NZ
