Per Chet Peters Book, Mary was given a generous dowry by her parents when she married, which they purchased a farm on Mill Creek in Bedford Co., VA., that farm did not pay off, so they sold and headed west in a wagon to Decatur, Ill. Because the Railroad soon put through a line close to their property, the value increased greatly. He sold and purchased a farm close to the city where they lived until they died.
