Daniel BRUGH
(19 July 1762 - 26 December 1825)
________________
from O'Bryant:
Daniel Bruch and wife were born in Pa. and moved to Botetourt County, Virginia after 1785 [after 1787 if the 1850 census records are correct about son John's birth in Pa.)
Mrs. William Floyd Robinson (Vista C. Brugh) of Nace Va. a great grand daughter of Daniel Brugh wrote a life history of "sketch" for a family reunion pamphlet dated July 28, 1949. She describes Daniel as enterprising and ambitious. January of 1789 Daniel's father sold 201 acres to Daniel "...out of love for and in consideration of 200 pounds English money." In the deed is incorporated the contract wherein Herman and wife are to have a home and board their lifetime with Daniel.
V. Brugh says that according to Court Records in Fincastle, Botetourt County, Virginia Daniel was present in 1792 to witness a deed made by Anthony Deardorf of Reading Township, York County, Pennsylvania. Daniel bought six tracts of land fro Deardorf. Apparently adjoining Deardorf's land. From his brother John he secured 100 acres by patent. By 1800 Daniel's holdings were more than 500 acres.
Vista Brugh described a house which Daniel his wife and children and Daniel's parents lived in as being large three story, ten room with attic, two porches running the length of the house overlooking a fine spring in the yard. A lovely meadow just beyond the house was near the winding clear Firestone Branch that emptied into Mill Creek just behind two wooded hills. This house Vista said is located on the road leading to Fincastle from the "Great Road"about one halve mile from the intersection. A large "Pennsylvania Dutch barn was also built. The house Vista Brugh described sounds like the Brugh Tavern featured in a story in the FINCASTLE HERALD March 10, 1993 which is called the Brugh Tavern. Vista Brugh says that Daniel Brugh built a grist mill on Mill Creek at the intersection of the Fincastle Rd. and the "Great Rd." in 1806. In 1949 the Great Rd. was known as Lee Highway (Route 11). The mill served for about 90 years then was remodeled into a barn by Julian Brugh, his great great grandson.
Daniel built what came to be called the old Rufus Brugh house and barn. This was later owned by Mrs. Mary Nace, according to Mathilda Brugh's notes, but she does not remember where she heard about this and does not know if it is the same house described by V. Brugh. Daniel had hundreds of acres of land which he divided among his children, giving each a farm. [Fincastle records]
Daniel served in the Revolutionary War in Pa. in Captain O'Blain's Co. and in the York Co. Militia in 1782[Pa. archives, York Co. Third Series, Vol. 7 page 73 and 74]
He and his wife are buried in the Old Simmons Graveyard near Mill Creek Church. Markers on their graves. It is called the Simmons graveyard because Jacob Simmons donated land for the grave yard.

Notes
Land
" Herman Bruch, the elder" sold his farm of 201 acres to " son Daniel, out of love for and in consideration of 200 pounds English money." In the deed is incorporated the contract wherein Herman Sr. and wife are to have a home and board their lifetime with Daniel.Land
Daniel bought six tracts of land, apparently adjoining, from said Deardorf; a tract from his brother John; secured 100 acres by patent, and by 1800 his holdings totaled more than 500 acres.Business
In 1806, Daniel built a grist mill on Mill Creek at the intersection of the Fincastle road and the "Great Road" which was the main thoroughfare for travelers from the north going south and west--which has been re-surveyed and re-located and is now known as the Lee Highway (Route #11). This mill served the community close to 90 years, when it was remodeled into a barn and the adjoining sawmill dismantled. In the memory of some of us still lingers the winding mill race around the mill that brought the water from up-stream into a big boxed trench on a trestle from the hill to the big wheel which seemed to turn so fascinatingly to childish minds.Death
Daniel, failing in health, resorted to a practice prevalent in the early days, was bled for the relief of the ailment. In leading a horse to water the wound became aggravated and death ensued. Thus a useful and successful life came to an end. At the age of 63, December 26, 1825, Daniel was laid to rest in the old "Dutch" graveyard, known as the Simmons Graveyard, so named because Jacob Simmons, a former German native of Pennsylvania, gave an acre of his farm as a burial place and was the first to be buried there, 1786. Seventeen years later, at the age of 75, the faithful wife, Elizabeth, was buried beside her husband and suitable tombstones mark their graves.Medical Note
According to Gr. Gr. Grdaughter Vista Brugh, Daniel in failing health was treated by being bled. The wound became aggravated and death followed.Endnotes
