Death

CONCORD - Mr. Walter L. "Dub" Furr Jr., 84, Concord, entered into eternal life on Monday, Aug. 16, 2004, at Avante of Concord. The funeral mass will be held at St. James Catholic Church on Friday at 11 a.m. Burial will follow in Oakwood Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 tonight at Wilkinson Funeral Home. A wake service will be held at 7:30 tonight at the funeral home. Mr. Furr was born Jan. 7, 1920, in Charlotte. He was the son of the late Walter L. Furr Sr. and Mary Barnhardt Furr. He lived in Concord most of his life. He was a loving husband and father. His wife, the late Marcella "Mickey" Hohne, died in 1998. Mr. Furr lovingly cared for her at home for more than 11 years. He was a lifelong member of St. James Catholic Church. Mr. Furr was the great-great-grandson of Joseph Barnhardt who introduced Catholicism into Cabarrus County. He was a land surveyor from 1941 until the early 1990s, except when serving in the military. He served in World War II in Europe and was a member of the American Legion. He was a charter member of the Knights of Columbus Council at St. James and the first Boy Scout leader at the church. Mr. Furr was active in scouting in many capacities in Cabarrus County for more than 23 years until his retirement in 1986 to take care of his wife. He received many Scout awards including the Silver Beaver and St. George awards. In addition to his parents and wife, Mr. Furr is preceded in death by one sister, Mrs. Frances Battle. Survivors include four daughters; Dianne Davidson and her husband, Phil, Grande Prairie, Texas; Sister Jean Furr of the Parish Visitors of Mary Immaculate, Scranton, Pa., Mrs. Elaine Reihl and her husband, Alan, Rockford, Tenn., and Mrs. Angela Poplin and her husband, Maurice, Kannapolis; two sons, Walter L. Furr III, and his wife, Judy, Chapel Hill, and Ronald A. Furr, Concord; a sister, Mrs. Mary Garris, Albemarle; a brother, Quint E. Furr, Chambersburg, Pa.; an aunt, Estelle Swain, Winston-Salem; nine grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; and numerous nieces, nephews and cousins. The family wishes to express appreciation to the doctors and staff of the Ardsley Medical Group, NorthEast Medical Center and Avante of Concord.
