Death

Sister Jean Marie Furr, P.V.M.I., of the congregation of the Order of Parish Visitors of Mary Immaculate, died Sunday at the VNA Hospice Unit of Community Medical Center. Born May 4, 1947, in Concord, N.C., she was the daughter of the late Walter L. and Marcella Hohne Furr. She entered religious life in 1967. She has since served the Order of Parish Visitors of Mary Immaculate as a director of religious education for parishes in Bronx, N.Y.; Rome, N.Y.; and Ellington, Conn. She was local superior at Scranton Convent and also served as formation director. Sister Jean received a master’s degree in theology from St. Mary’s Seminary and the University of Baltimore and later pursued a doctoral degree in systematic theology at Catholic University, Washington, D.C. Surviving are three sisters, Diane Davidson, Grand Prairie, Texas; Elaine Reihl, Rockford, Tenn.; and Angela Poplin, Kannapolis, N.C.; two brothers, Walter L. Furr III, Chapel Hill, N.C.; and Ronald A. Furr, Forest City, N.C.; an aunt, Mary Garris, Albemarle, N.C.; several nieces and nephews. A Mass will be celebrated Wednesday at 10:30 a.m. in Immaculate Conception Church, 801 Taylor Ave. Friends may call at the church Wednesday, 9:30 until the time of Mass. A funeral Mass and burial will be conducted on Friday at 10:30 a.m. in Marycrest Convent, Monroe, N.Y. Interment, Our Lady of the Assumption Cemetery, on the grounds of the Marycrest Convent.
