Death
Lee R. Furr, 88, of Florence, died peacefully at home Thursday, May 16, 2013. Lee was born to the late Roy Lee Furr and Ruth Boswell Furrof Newton, North Carolina on March 18, 1925. Lee graduated from Newton-Conover High School in 1943 and studied 3 years at the University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill, and was a member of Alpha Tau Omega fraternity. From July 1943 to March 1946, Lee served our nation in wartime with the U.S. Navy (Seabees) 122nd NCB in the South Pacific. Lee worked for several companies in North Carolina before becoming a Time Standards Engineer with Fieldcrest Mills. This eventually led him to General Electric Corporation in Hickory, NC in 1955. During his 30 year career with General Electric, he held several positions including Manager of Methods and Time Standards in Angers, France and Lynchburg, Virginia, and finally as Manager of Industrial Engineering Florence, SC with the Mobile Radio Plant from 1973 to his retirement in 1984. From July 1994, Lee has been an active member of the Golden K Kiwanis Club of Florence. He served as Director, Distinguished Secretary for 4 years, Distinguished President; and Distinguished Carolinas District Lieutenant-Governor. He was awarded the Life membership, the George F. Hixson Fellowship and most recently served as Club Publicity Chairman and Newsletter Editor. He was preceded in death by his brother Joseph Boswell Furr of Newton, NC, his son LeeWilson Furr and his wife Claudine Edgerton Furr of Florence. He is survived by his wife of sixty-four years Darlene ("Dot") Wilson Furr of Florence; sister Dorothy Furr Yount of Fernandina Beach, Florida; sons Thomas Daniel Furr and wife Sonya Steverson Furr of Summerville, SC; Robert Marshall Furr of Murrells Inlet; James Edward Furr and wife Pamela Milligan Furr of Simpsonville, SC; daughter Elizabeth Furr Bell and husband Robert Glenn Bell, III of Germantown, MD; and John Claude Furr and wife Karen Elizabeth Furr of Columbia; Lee is also survived by six grandchildren: Justin Andrew Furr, James Ryan Furr, Garrett Marshall Furr, Kristen Bell Newcomer, Patrick Daniel Bell and Leanna Furr Card. Lee was a member of All Saints Episcopal Church in Florence and a member of the Board of Directors for the Salvation Army. The family would like to thank Agape Hospice for their loving care and support. A celebration of life will be held on Saturday, May 25, 2013 at 11 o'clock a.m. at All Saints Episcopal Church in Florence. Arrangements are being made by Cain Funeral Home in Florence, SC. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to the Florence Salvation Army or to the Florence Golden K Kiwanis Club.Endnotes
