Col. Carl J. Furr, 87, of Mesa, Ariz., died May 13, 1991, in Provo. He was born Sept. 2, 1903, in Albermarie, N.C., a son of G.P. and Mary Hathcock Furr, of Mesa, Ariz. He married Norma Henrie, June 15, 1930, in Eugene, Ore. They were later divorced. She now resides in Provo. He moved to Idaho at a young age and later moved to Mesa, Ariz., which became his permanent residence. He served a 2 1/2 year LDS mission in Mexico. He attended USAC in Logan, where he received his B.A. degree. He received his master’s degree from the University of Oregon and a Ph.D. from the University of Chicago. He served 32 years in the U.S. Army where he rose to the rank of colonel. He served in Brazil and Africa during World War II and in Japan during the Korean War. He retired from military service in 1957 and was then employed with the Atomic Energy Commission for eight years. He returned to Mesa, Ariz. in 1966. He is survived by three sons, Karl J. Furr, Orem; Dr. Paul A. Furr, Houston, Texas; James Bruce Furr, Vienna, Va.; 10 grandchildren, 26 great-grandchildren; one brother, James A. Furr, Phoenix, Ariz.; one sister, Mary Johnston, Phoenix, Ariz. Funeral will be Saturday, 1 p.m. at Meldrum Mortuary, 52 N. McDonald, Mesa, Ariz., where friends may call one hour prior to services. Burial Mesa City Cemetery, Mesa, Ariz. Full military rites will be accorded at the grave site.The Daily Herald, Provo, Utah, May 14, 1991
