Death
Raleigh, North Carolina - Pauline Furr Hendrix, 100, of Raleigh, NC, passed away April 1, 2025. Pauline, known as Polly to her friends, was born August 18, 1924, in Stanly County, NC. After graduating from high school, she attended Appalachian, where she earned her teaching credentials. Over the years, she coached women's high school basketball, taught PE, and math at the elementary (Sherwood Bates), junior high (Martin), and high school (Kannapolis, Tarboro, Broughton) level. She later returned to school at NCSU and earned her masters' degree, becoming a guidance counselor at Broughton High School in Raleigh. Polly was a faithful member of St. John's Baptist Church, where she served in many roles, including Sunday School teacher and Deacon. She was also an active member in the Beta Chapter of Delta Kappa Gamma for many years. Polly was married to the love of her life, Robert Hendrix, for more than 75 years, before his passing in 2021. She was also preceded in death by her parents Joe Brady and Viola Furr, and son-in-law Ted Cashion. She is survived by daughters Ann Vavro (Gary), and Nancy Cashion, grandson Christopher Winstead, and great-grandson Connor Winstead. She is also survived by step-grandchildren Jennifer Cheek (Lee), Sandi Sanabria (Minor), step-great-grandchildren Lauren, Sam, Leana, and Sofia, along with the Montagnard families she considered her children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren. The family would like to thank Pat, IJ, and Chiemeka of Amazing Light, and especially Polly's dedicated caregivers Rufus Short and Ismail Nijie for their compassionate care. They would also like to thank the nurses and staff at Transitions for all their assistance and care over the past 11 months. A Celebration of Life will be held in the Chapel of Mitchell Funeral Home, 7209 Glenwood Avenue, Raleigh, NC, on Tuesday, April 8 at 11 am. Burial will follow at Raleigh Memorial Park. The family will receive visitors Monday evening, April 7, from 6 pm to 8 pm at the funeral home.
