Death
Ronald Jennings Furr, 76, of Charlotte, died Monday, May 4, 2020, at the Novant Medical Center – Presbyterian Campus in Charlotte. Ron was born in Charlotte, NC, on April 25, 1944, the son of John and Mabel Navy Furr. He grew up in Charlotte and graduated from Garinger High School. He went to work for Charlotte Poultry, Merita Bakery, and then as a painter for the Charlotte Mecklenburg School System before going to work for Pelton and Crane (now Siemens Corp). Ultimately, he went on to work for and retire from the City of Charlotte Street Department. When not working, Ron loved to work outside. Blessed with the ability to understand mechanical objects and work with his hands, he and his tools could be found fixing just about anything around when he wasn’t just enjoying his time in his cedar swing. It started early on when he spent time box car racing. Ron was also a fan of Elvis, had his own collection of recorded tapes and vinyl and when it came to dancing, he was a gifted dancer who could Shag with the best of them. And when the NFL expansion brought the Panthers to town, Ron also became a lifelong Panthers fan. Most of all, Ron enjoyed the time spent with family and friends. A perpetual lady’s man, he even loved to flirt with the nurses at the hospital in his time there. Ron was also wise to the ways of the world, and he liberally doled out such statements as “Make sure you have a flashlight”, “Keep a roadside kit around” and “keep a gun handy” to those he knew and loved. Ron is survived by his long time caregiver, Tekisha “Tasha” Scott of Charlotte; his daughter Tamera and husband Tommy Melton of Morehead City, NC; a granddaughter Laura Melton of Bahama, NC; a grandson Aaron and his wife Kathryn Melton of Monterrey, California; a granddaughter Ashley Furr of Midland, NC; a great grandson Jackson Melton; a sister, Betty Sue Humphries of Charlotte; a nephew Ted Humphries of Charlotte; and a niece Melanie and husband Tom Cusano of Charlotte. Ron is further survived by his best friend and last of their “Chantilly Group”, Roddy Beard, as well as numerous other relatives and friends. He was preceded in death by his son, Tommy Furr; his brother, Richard “Dickie” Furr; his mother, Mable Navy Furr, and his father, John Furr. Ron’s family has given the family of Lowe-Neddo Funeral Home the privilege of caring for him and for them. A graveside service led by Rev. Steve Gompers will be held on Friday, May 8, 2020, 11:00 AM at Charlotte Memorial Gardens where his parents are buried. Thank you for keeping the family in your thoughts, prayers and acts of kindness, both those done and those yet to be.Endnotes
