Death
McALESTER — Dexter W. Furr, 71, of Kiowa, died Wednesday, Nov. 14, 2012, at Mary Hurley Hospital in Coalgate. The family will receive visitors from 6 to 8 p.m. today at Bishop Funeral Home. Funeral services will be at 2 p.m. Friday at Praise Fellowship Church, south of Kiowa on Highway 69, with the Rev. John Phillips officiating. Burial will be at Kiowa Cemetery with military honors. Funeral arrangements are under the direction of Bishop Funeral Service of McAlester. Born April 16, 1941, in Harper’s Valley Community, he was the son of Markus T. and Georgia Schultz Furr. He attended school in Harper’s Valley before entering the United States Army. After he received his honorable discharge, he worked for Union Pacific Railroad as a machine operator until his retirement in 1997. He enjoyed spending time with his grandchildren. He also enjoyed drinking coffee at the Brass Rose, where he would visit with his friends. He was a member of the American Legion Post No. 0268 in Kiowa. Survivors include a daughter and son-in-law, Julie and Bob Linscott, of Kiowa; granddaughters, Jessica Higgins, of Kiowa, and Lori Linscott, of Kiowa; stepdaughter, Judy C. Griffin, of Kiowa; and stepson, Jimmy Wood and wife, Sheryl, of Pittsburg. Also, four stepgrandchildren and nine stepgreat-grandchildren; special friend, Barbara Hood, of Kiowa; sisters and brothers, Earlene Allen and husband, Otis, of Kiowa, Francis Mitchell and husband, James, of Kiowa, Irene Mitchell and husband, Doyle, of Kiowa, Lorene Mitchell and husband, Jackie, of Kiowa, Kay Irvin, of Wilburton, Bob Furr and wife, Betty, of Lehigh, Smithy Furr and wife, Ruby, of Kiowa, and Bill Furr and wife, Pat, of Hemet, Calif., and numerous nieces, nephews and cousins. He was preceded in death by his parents; brothers, Markus Furr and Harvey Furr, and a sister, Arlene Furr. Pallbearers will be Andy Johnson, William Johnson, Melvin Powell, Clyde Swain, Lance Hess and Rick Griffin. Honorary pallbearers will be Phil Hatridge, Roger Hatridge, David Maxwell, Bill Quick, Leon O’Dell and Hank Evans.Endnotes
