MARQUETTE, MI. - Murphy Samuel "Murph" Furr, 83, of Marquette, passed away Thursday afternoon, January 3, 2013, at the D.J. Jacobetti Home for Veterans surrounded by family, his pastor and under the care of Lake Superior Hospice. He was born August 11, 1929, in Hot Springs, Arkansas a son of the late Samuel and Florence (Ross) Furr. Murph enlisted in the US Air Force and retired following 20 years of service as a Tech Sergeant. He then worked as a civil servant for the Department of Defense for 22 years at KI Sawyer AFB before retiring. He was an avid hunter and fisherman. On a trip to Alaska he once landed a 302 pound halibut, which was nearly a record. He enjoyed sports, especially watching his grandchildren play. His other interests included caring for a large garden in his back yard and watching the Green Bay Packers. Murph was a member of the American Legion Post #44 and was a past member of the Moose Lodge and the Gwinn Bowling League. He is survived by his wife, the former Shirley Ann Walstrom of Marquette; children, Kevin Furr of Marquette, Ronald (Terri) Olson of Gwinn, Andrew Olson of Minot, ND, Laurie (Jerome) Tengesdahl of Kingsford, MI and Diane (Gerald) Demeuse of Marquette; brothers, Edward (Lorna) Furr of Lakewood, CO and Al (Ilene) Furr of Phoenix, AZ; sister, Judy Johnson of Phoenix, AZ; 16 grandchildren; 19 great-grandchildren; and numerous nieces & nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents; a son, Jay Murphy Furr in August 1977; brothers, Kelly Furr and Olan Furr; and sister, Mavis Gregg. A memorial service will be held on Thursday, January 10, 2013 at 12 Noon at Bethel Baptist Church with Rev. Hank Steede officiating. Visitation will be held in the church for one hour prior to the service. A spring interment will take place in Park Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions can be made to the D.J. Jacobetti Home for Veterans Activity Fund or Lake Superior Hospice Association.
