OAKBORO -- Leonard Lamar Furr, 80, died May 31, 2008. Funeral 4pm Monday, Mineral Springs Baptist Church; burial, church cemetery. Hartsell Funeral Home of Albemarle in charge. Published in the Charlotte Observer on 6/2/2008.Leonard Lamar Furr, 80, of 8008 N.C. 205, Oakboro, died at 1:20 p.m. Saturday, May 31, 2008, at Lutheran Home, Albemarle.His funeral was at 4 p.m. Monday, June 2, 2008, at Mineral Springs Baptist Church, Oakboro, with a 30-minute state. The Rev. Keith Walters officiated and burial was in the church cemetery.The family received friends in the church fellowship hall after the service.Born April 15, 1928, in Stanly County, NC, he was the son of the late Charlie Hampton and Rosa Hopkins Furr. Mr. Furr was a World War II veteran of the U.S. Navy and a retired farmer. He was a member of the Stanly County Soil and Water Board for 30 years and the Stanly County Farm Bureau for 30 years. A life long member of Mineral Springs Baptist Church, he was active as long as his health permitted. He served as choir director for 20 years. He was preceded in death by a son, Melvin Furr; two brothers, Reece Furr and Newell Furr; and a sister, Colon Austin.He is survived by his wife, Marie Stewart Furr of the home; a son, Rex Furr of Oakboro; two grandsons, Trent Furr and Patrick Furr, both of Oakboro; and two sisters, Lois Coble and Ruby Tucker, both of Oakboro.Arrangements by Hartsell Funeral Home-Albemarle.
