Due to Carl and Lela separating when Carlene was just an infant, Carl raised her until she was 5. At that time, she moved to Detroit, Michigan were her mother raised her until she was 12. Carlene has gone by the name of Carlene Beatrice for the first 5 years of her life, and from the time she was 12. During the time she was with her mother, Carlene was called Caroline. Strangely enough, when Carlene was 50 she ordered a copy of her birth certificate, and found that her actual birth name is Carlena and she has no middle name. She continues to go by Carlene Beatrice.

Death
Carlene Beatrice Uptigrove, 85, of Lancaster, Calif., passed away Thursday, Dec. 31, 2020, at St. Johns Hospital in Tulsa, Okla.. She was born May 26, 1935, in Ft. Smith, to the late Carl Leonard Furr, Sr. and Lela Beatrice Davis Furr. She was a retired bookkeeper, was of the Apostolic/Pentecostal faith. She was a member of the Pentecostal Lighthouse Church in Lancaster, Calif. She was preceded in death by her husband of 50 years, James Clifton Uptigrove; a son, Charley Eugene Uptigrove; grandparents, John Wilbur and Hattie Belle Nix-Furr; and brothers, Blondine Ree, Jr., Robert Furr and Carl Leonard Furr, Jr. Survivors include her brothers, Curtis Furr of Bakersfield, Calif. and Dale Furr (Lupe), of Bakersfield, Calif.; sister-in-law, Hazel Ree of Broken Arrow, Okla.; sons, Carl Uptigrove (Paulette) of Booneville, Ark. and Clifton Uptigrove (Debra) of Bakersfield, Calif.; daughters, Charlene Mayes (Rick), of Lancaster, Calif. and Carol Hinton (Steven) of Lancaster, Calif.; fifteen grandchildren; 15 great grandchildren; as well as many friends and loved ones she considered to be as close as family. Graveside services were 1 p.m. Friday, Jan. 8, at Prairie Grove Cemetery in Drew County.Endnotes
