Notes
Death
John Monroe Furr, 41-year-old veteran of the World war, died at his home in Norwood Saturday night from the effects of a bullet wound in his head, reportedly fired with suicidal intent. Witnesses stated that Furr placed a .32 calibre rifle against his head and pulled the trigger that fired the shot. Available information is to the effect that an oyster supper was being given at the Furr home, and that an uninvited guest appeared and, due to indulgence in whiskey, created a disturbance. Furr is alleged to have secured his rifle and went out into the yard to drive the intruder away, being followed by his wife, who attempted to take the gun from him. It is believed that anger at the intruder and the interference of his wife caused Furr to carry out a previously expressed intention of killing himself. The deceased was born in Stanly county, a son of Mr. and Mrs. W. C. Furr. He was married on November 21 to Miss Lola Morton, and from this union two small children survive. A brother, W. D., lives at Norwood, two sisters, Mrs. Victoria Lorch and Mrs. Hattie Almond, live in Albemarle. His father resides near Norwood. Funeral service was held from the home Sunday afternoon at 3:30 o'clock, and burial was in Cedar Grove cemetery, with Rev. J. C. Bennett officiating. Pallbearers were D. T. Singleton, W. B. Lee, W. H. Mabry, Heywood Duke, A. H. Hancock and R. M. Byrd.Stanly News and Press, Albemarle, North Carolina, November 5, 1935
