Per researcher Nancy D. Hendrickson:
Israel Furr was born November 11, 1833 in Stanly County N. Carolina. He was a farmer. While growing up, Israel's parents Paul S. and Sarah Furr had plenty of sons to work the farm, and they didn't believe in slavery. At the outbreak of the American Civil War, the Furrs were all great admirers of Pres. Abraham Lincoln. They believed in his cause, but Israel and 3 of his brothers (Faranton, Crittendon, and Aaron Furr, all in the NC 28th) fought for the Confederacy.
Israel was married February 15, 1855 to Margaret Scott (who later married Mr. Coble) at the age of 21.
At age 28 , Israel followed his younger brothers' lead and enlisted in the Confederacy on 3 September 1862 as a Private from Iredell County, North Carolina; Company C, North Carolina 23rd Infantry Regiment. Israel fought in the following battles:
South Mountain (Sept 14, 1862)
Sharpsburg (Sept 17, 1862)
Fredricksburg (Dec 13, 1862)
The battle of Fredericksburg (which his brother Crittendon also fought in, in the NC 28th unit) was Israel's last battle, He was either wounded there, or he became sick - as sickness was a common cause of death for Civil War soldiers. After just 4 months of enlisting in the Civil War, Israel died at age 29 on 31 Jan 1863 at Hanover Junction, Virginia, of pneumonia. He left behind his wife Margaret and four small children, Serina (8), Mandy (4), Louisa (2), and unborn child (or infant), Wilson.
