Individual Details

Joseph Christopher LARDNER

(9 May 1861 - 23 Apr 1899)

Christopher Lardner was born to an unwed mother, Ann, during Apr-Jun 1861 in Witney, Oxfordshire, UK. The mother died in 1869 and the 1871 census reports him as an "inmate" of the Witney Union Workhouse in Curbridge, Oxfordshire. By 1881, he had left the workhouse and was employed as an ostler (a handler of horses, often at an inn). He boarded with a family named Dykes, in Brentford, Middlesex, UK. On 20 Mar 1886, witnessed by Ellen Dykes, he married Lydia Busby at the Caversham Free Church, Henley, Oxfordshire. The marriage record states that the marriage was performed according to the rites of the "Protestant Dissenters," so it's possible that this is the current Baptist Church. At the time, he was employed as a railway porter at the Victoria Docks, Essex. In 1891, the couple, with two children, was living in West Ham, Essex, while he continued working as a porter. Christopher died Apr-Jun 1899 in West Ham, leaving his wife Lydia with the two children. She married Patrick McColgan and eventually emigrated to the United States.

Every record, aside from the birth record, uses the name Christopher rather than Joseph Christopher.

All of these locations are in the greater London area. At the time, London had a well-developed network of railways, so the movements described were practical.

The case for his parentage is circumstantial. The information that he supplied for the marriage certificate states that his father is "William Lardner (deceased) Stonemason". Because all of the Lardners in Oxfordshire were agricultural laborers, I consulted with an English genealogist on the subject. He told me that, to avoid embarrassing the new in-laws, illegitimate children typically indicated that their father was deceased and assigned him a common name; "William" is among the most common names of the time. He also said that it was the custom to name an illegitimate child after a friend or relative of the father. With this information, it's easy to find Ann Lardner, an unwed woman with two other children, working in the household of James Buckingham. Buckingham has a brother named Christopher. The census records show that Buckingham was a stonemason. Therefore, it is reasonable to believe that Christopher was the son of James Buckingham and Ann Lardner.
