Notes
Birth
A birth date of 1850 could be estimated from remembrances of Vinna Helstern, recorded in 1989" "He was over 80 [years old] ... when [Carol] was less than a year old [1928-29]Curt Castner, however, indicates that he was "about 24 when he was married" in 1893. That would give him a birth date of 1869.
Occupation
Remembrances of Vinna (Bowers) Helstern, tape-recorded 1989 by Bob GrossRhoda Wineland’s siblings “Two of [Rhoda’s] brothers went west. Charles went to OR; no contact that I’m aware of. Herbert went to OK...(David Wineland must have passed on to his children some pretty good minds, as well as his temper!) Uncle Herbert got into oil. I was young when he sent to Dad a couple of shares of oil stock he was starting. Half a dozen years later he wrote and said ‘Harvey, it would be a good time to sell those shares if you’ll send them to me’ and we each got $100. He continued in the oil business...Uncle Ben, the oldest of the [Wineland] sons stayed in Springfield and must have read for the law. When [Carol] was less than a year old, [he] and his wife and son stopped at the house; he was past 80 and had just been elected to his 7th term as circuit court judge in Springfield IL. Uncle Ben’s son was studying law at the time.
Here was a hot-headed father [David Wineland]but children that really made the most of certain opportunities.”
Mary Sue’s memories: Cora Stutzman, one of Rhoda’s sisters, married a Neher and they lived in Pomona, California
Curt Castner, great-grandson of Ben Wineland, indicates that "he had different jobs thru the years" including a "police magistrate." copy of page from Flora IL history book: "BEN F. WINELAND was born in Girard, Macoupin County, Illinois in 1870. He came to Flora as a carpenter, a trade which he followed for many years. Later he served as postmaster here for seven years, and is now in his fourth term as the city's police magistrate."
