Mathias Harmon

(Ca 1736 - 2 Apr 1832)

Mathias, led a party in 1755 to construct a log cabin on Louisa River, which became known as Harman Station. It is thought to be the first permanent English speaking settlement made in Eastern Kentucky.
Harman's Station was in the original Fayette County, now Johnson Co.

Mathias is said to have settled in the Clinch Valley along with brothers Henry and George, around 1772. [I believe George was dead in 1749.]
Another version:
In 1771, Mathias Harman and his brothers, Henry and Jacob [Jacob was a cousin - not a brother] , settled at Carrs’ place on one of the head branches of Clinch River, some two miles east of the present town of Tazewell

In 1799, Mathias Harman and his wife, Lydia, executed a deed in ___ county, Kentucky, for land in Wythe county, Virginia.

In 1802 and thereafter, he resided in the present Tazewell county, Virginia, on Dry Fork, where he died ___ 1832, at the ripe old age of ninety-six years. He was buried on his old home farm, which was later known as the Captain D. G. Sayers farm. Captain Sayers married Louisa Harman, a great grand-daughter of said Mathias Harman, Sr. This farm is now owned and occupied by Louisa’s daughter, Mariah, who married Charles Poe.

In 1787, Mathias Harman and Thomas Wiley owned and resided on adjacent farms on Walker's Creek, in present day Bland County, then Tazewell. When Jennie Wiley was captured, Mathias led the party in pursuit. I believe he is in some databases called "Old Skygusty", others believe the nickname was attached to his brother Henry.
The name was supposed to be some sort of Indian derivative of "the little devil with the big nose".
Note: The above has been attributed to the wrong Mathias. It is certain that Henry Harman, Sr., and his two sons, George and Mathias, fought the seven Indians on Tug River on 12 November 1788. Mathias Harman, Sr., did not participate in the Tug River fight. The Mathias who was in that fight was the nineteen year old son of Henry Harman, Sr.

There is a plaque near Black Wolf, McDowell Co, West Virginia, dedicated to the Harmons for the many Indian battles. It may say that it was Henry Harmon who was Skygusty for "Great Warrior".

Mathias married Lydia Skaggs.
Children were: Katie, Mathias, Pheby, Adam, Henry, Louisa and Rebecca.

A Martha Bailey, daughter of John Bailey & Ann "Nancy" Davidson is said to have married "Long Henry" Harman, son of Henry "Old Skygusty" Harman, 1 Jan 1807 in Tazewell Co VA. The elder Henry Harman's son Henry married his first cousin Christina Harman so Martha Bailey did not marry him unless he was married more than one time.
