Lydia Skaggs
( - 2 Oct 1814)
A court case in 1837 involving two counties - Tazewell, VA and Green, KY - involved all of Lydia's siblings and the children of those that had children, neglects to state the name of her father.
Moses Skaggs had died intestate and without children many years ago, but possessed of a quantity of real and personal property. Brothers were Henry, Richard, Charles, Jacob, and John. Sisters were Susannah who married Richard Whitt; Lydia who married Mathias Harman; Elizabeth who married John Hankins; Nancy who married William Meridy. All of the brothers and sisters and their spouses were dead by 1837.
Henry, Richard, Charles & Jacob Skaggs died intestate and without heirs.
Surviving heirs include
The four daughters of John Skaggs: Susan, wife of William Quary, the wife of Thomas York, the wife of Laban Ellis, Rebecca Skaggs, unmarried.
The children of Susannah & Richard Whitt: Hez Whitt, Edmund Whitt, Susan who married Henry Creswell, said Henry being dead
The children of Lydia & Mathias Harman: Adam, Mathias, & Henry Harman, Katy, wife of Robert Beavers, Phebe wife of Moses Beavers, and Lovace now dead who married Thomas Christian
The children of Elizabeth & John Hankins: Rachel, wife of Archibald Maloney; Sally, wife of
John Mitchell; Rebecca, wife of John Howell; Mary, wife of Joseph White: and Parthena, Lucy, Lydia, Joseph & Moses Hankins.
The children of Nancy & William Meridy: John, James, Daniel, Mathias, & William Meridy the only ones now living, the rest having died unmarried.
Moses Skaggs removed from Washington Co VA to Kentucky about 1791 and died about 1805.
It should be noted that Henry & Charles Skaggs had both been married to Thompsons.
Henry Skaggs married Mary Thompson; Charles married Lucinda "Lucy" Thompson. A diary written by Archibald Thompson, brother to Mary & Lucy, lists several Skaggs children for both. It seems to stretch the imagination that all these heirs could have been deceased by 1835. Perhaps the families had lost touch and the demise of Henry & Charles "without heirs" was an assumption.
There are numerous recorded instances of the Thompsons and Harmons being associated.
Archibald was the 2nd child born to the Rev. John Thompson and his wife Mary - his sisters recorded as follows:
#3 Mary Thompson married Henry Skaggs, the brother of Lydia Skaggs, the latter of whom married Mathias Harman, above. Archibald Thompson does not provide a marriage date for Mary (Thompson) and Henry Skaggs, but he does provide a listing of their children (p. 10):
• “John Thompson Skaggs was born on the 4th 5th of Deber 1760”
• “Lucy Skaggs was born the 5th of December 1762”

#4 Lucy married Charles Skaggs, brother of Henry (above), and of Lydia Skaggs who married Mathias Harman. The births of their children were similarly recorded in his Diary by Archibald Thompson:
• “Archibald Skaggs son of Charles & lucy his wife was Born the 3 of January 1759”

Archibald Thompson's mother-in-law was Lydia Elswick - Archibald married Mary Elwick, 26 Sep 1760 when he was aged 25. Lydia, her mother, was the widow of John Elswick and she married 2nd to Jacob Lorton, brother of Sarah Lorton who married Jacob Harmon Jr.
