Isaac Lawson

(Abt 1789 - )

Isaac Lawson's household was reduced by an adult male, over age 16, in the year 1810 and the same year as Isaac Jr. appears in the same tax district with the Robert who married Margaret Hicks. The will of the elder Isaac does indicate he had a son of the same name as his. Only these two Isaacs have shown up in the records of Rockbridge. The young Isaac seems to have appeared on the tax rolls about 1807 so his birth is estimated as about 1789.

There is a marriage recorded in Rockbridge for Isaac Lawson to Nancy Anderson, 15 Feb 1815. This information was found in an old research file and has the note that Isaac was born 1788 [recorded]. That would seem to be compatible with the tax records. The origin of this handwritten note is unknown - it was in the files of Aubrey Stigall. This list of marriages also has the minister for most of the Lawson marriages. A. B. Davidson was the minister - he also married Isaac's sister Rebecca and his brother Andrew. Diehl states in a letter that Davidson was minister of the Oxford Presbyterian Church from 1815-1817 and Davidson did extensive work in the Kerr's Creek area. Diehl was at that time of the letter, 1957, the pastor of Oxford Church.

Deed Book O page 87 Jane R. Lawson for $1.00 sold Isaac Lawson Jr. the tract of land on which their father, Isaac Lawson, Sr. resided; it had been willed to her by her father. 215 acres on Kerr's Creek Adjoining lands of James Lackey and John Simonds heirs. He took it subject to the payment of all the debts of Isaac Lawson Sr. Deceased for which it is legally bound by deeds of trust on otherwise. Recorded May 3, 1824 [day made]
Isaac is shown as paying tax on this land, 215 acres, through 1827, but that's as far as the tax transcriptions go.

In 1826 and 1827, an Isaac Lawson appeared on the personal property tax rolls of Rockbridge, declaring a single horse. He was not there earlier, not afterward.

After 1827, I'm not sure what happened to Isaac. There was an Isaac Lawson in neighboring Augusta Co VA in 1830. He had 2m -5, 2m 5-10, 2m 10-15 and a male 40-50 [Issac would have been just about 40]; 1f 10-15 and a female age 30-40.

Isaac was not still in Augusta Co in 1840. However, in Liberty Township of Highland Co, Ohio was an Isaac Lawson. The children age fairly consistently with the 1830 census back in Augusta. Issac had 2 m age 10-15, 1m 15-20, 1m 20-30 and 1m 50-60; 1f 5-10, 1f 10-15 and 1f 40-50.

15 Jun 1854
An Isaac Lawson was issued a land patent for 40 acres in Randolph Co. It was the SW quarter of the NE quarter of Twp 1, Section 8, Range 6 West. He took out a second patent for 80 acres on 30 Oct 1857 for 80 acres. The NE quarter of the NW quarter, Twp 1, Section 8, Range 6 West, and the SE quarter of the SW quarter of Section Twp 36, Section 7, Range 6 West. These would have been adjacent sections.
These two patents appear to possibly have been for his service in the War of 1812. Files indicate an Isaac Lawson was a Sergeant in Capt Dixson's Company, Virginia Military. He never applied for a pension but did receive the following bounty land: #48944, 40 acres, 1850 and #37579, 120, 1855.

1860 Census. Randolph Co Illinois, Twp 8S, Range 5W, Jones Creek P.O.
Hh 3126 - Wm M. Jeffrey, age 38, wife Elizabeth, born in KY - age 29, five children born in IL but two are age 14 and might not be Elizabeth's. Dyler Stanley age 20, b. NY and Lenird Fair, age 55, b. VT and living with the family as is Isaac Lawson, age 71, Farmer, b. VA. He is on the same page with an Andrew Lawson, age 66.
Found in the Illinois Marriage database online: William M. Jeffry married Elizabeth W. Banfield on 26 Jan 1852, Randolph Co. Unless Elizabeth was a young widow, she was not likely a daughter of Isaac. He seems to be just a boarder.

1880 Marriage of a Samuel Lawson, age 50 (b. about 1830) to Julia Fox, Jackson Co, IL. States his father was Isaac Lawson; his mother's maiden name Anderson. Julia was 26, daughter of Geo. A. Fox - her mother's maiden name, Campbell.
