BIOGRAPHY:
Despite research efforts by many, the maiden name of Susannah, wife of Simon Clement, has never been proven; neither do we know whether she was Simon's first wife, nor do we know how many of his children she bore.

The first reference to Susanna was with her husband in a deed dated 1760.(Source: Amelia Co., VA Deed: Book 7, p 304)

Simon Clement started buying land in Granville Co., NC in 1777.(Source: Granville Co., NC Deed, Book L p. 284)

Susannah was last mentioned in a deed selling what appears to have been the last of their land in Amelia in 1778.(Source: Amelia Co., VA Deed: Book p 296)

Because documents in Amelia Co. showed that James Lockett’s Will was witnessed by Simon Clement, that James Lockett (the son of William and Jane Lockett) had a sister Susannah and a brother Benjamin, and that Simon Clement and Benjamin Lockett were close neighbors and business associates, we (and others) long thought that Simon's wife might have been James and Benjamin's sister, Susannah Lockett.

Further research, however, has shown that not to be the case.

William Lockett left a will in Chesterfield Co., VA naming 8 sons (William, Benjamin, John, Thomas, James, Halcott, Jacob, and Abraham) and 4 daughters (Susanna Ashbrook, Jane Lockett, Margaret Lockett, and Winifred Lockett). His Will was dated 5 Dec. 1756 and recorded 2 Sept. 1757. (Source: Chesterfield Co., VA, Will Book 1, pg 253)

James Lockett's Will was dated May 26 1758 and proved 22 Mar 1759; wit Simon Clement, Wm. Russell, John Drinkwater; ex. John Lockett; legatees seven brothers (Benjamin, John, Thomas, William, Halcoat, Joseph, Abraham) and 4 sisters (Susannah, Jane, Margaret, Winnefred).(Source: Amelia Co., VA, Will Book 1, p. 145)

Susannah Lockett, daughter of William, married Joseph Ashbrook according to her sister, Jane, whose 1759 Will left all her property to her three sisters (Susannah Ashbrook, Margaret Lockett, and Winifred Lockett). It was dated 13 Jan. 1759 and recorded 2 Mar. 1759.(Source: Chesterfield Co., VA,Will Book 1, pg 284;Chesterfield Co., VA, Court Order Book 2, p. 498)

Joseph was the son of Peter Ashbrook, who identified him as such in his 1756 Will.

Chesterfield County taxed Joseph on two tithes in 1756 and 1762.He was the head of a household (12 whites and nine blacks) in Chesterfield County in 1783.

Joseph Ashbrook (Susanna's husband and William Lockett's son-in-law ) became guardian to her minor siblings Margaret and Winifred Lockett in 1761.(Source: Chesterfield Co., VA, Court Order Book 3, p. 117; Chesterfield Co., VA, Court Order Book 4, p. 101)

Joseph Ashbrook left a will that mentioned no wife but left legacies to five children, a son-in-law, and his Bailey grandchildren. The Will was dated 18 Sept. 1801 and recorded 13 Sept. 1802.(Source: Chesterfield Co., VA, Will Book 5, p. 565; Chesterfield Co., VA, Court Order Book 14, p. 351)

Conclusion: The Susannah who married Simon Clement could not have been the Susanna who was the daughter of William Lockett, the sister of James & Benjamin Lockett, and the wife of Joseph Ashbrook.
