From a letter written by Beth Humiston on 22 March 1993 to David and Joyce Stettler, reminiscing about David's father, Beth's "Uncle Babe" (ie. Walter): Your Dad was absolutely darling, he was. I loved him so very much. Like Aunt Freda, he was very special to me. In fact, when I was a little girl, I was going to grow up and marry him someday. He was so handsome and he loved us little girls and played games with us and showered us with attention, while the other big folks just sat and visited. We used to go to Joliet for a reunion every Fall before school started, and that was the only time we were together. Uncle Babe always bought watermelon for me because I loved it so much, and if he was here today he would laugh and tell everyone how I never failed to wet the bed from eating so much watermelon. Poor me, I was so embarrassed. And then he would wait until we went inside the out-house and settled in there and he would all of a sudden pound on the side and scare us half to death. But you know, we liked the attention. We knew he was always going to play jokes on us. I really felt a deep loss that morning Mom called to say that he was gone. I hadn't seen him for years but a little girl's feelings for someone she loved in her childhood came pouring into my heart. What a gift from God to have had him for a father, David!"
