John Gottlieb "Hans" STETTLER

(13 Jun 1902 - 2 Dec 1995)

Notes from Beth Humiston's interview with her father, Herman Stettler: "Hans used to eat walnuts. He loved walnuts and we used to get money for them . . we sold them. Hans would sit by the stove and crack and eat them, and mother would get cross with him for spilling the shells. He had a horse and he rode a lot. He and his friend, Bud Knickabacher headed west on their horses and got 100 miles from home. Bud got homesick and went home. Hans's horse wanted to go home too, so Hans went back. They had gotten as far as into Iowa from Joliet! Hans, Babe and I trapped a lot . . . coon. We fished in the creek . . . loved to fish. We hunted for mushrooms. We went swimming and had contests to see who could hold their breath the longest."
