Freda STETTLER

(19 Apr 1898 - 9 Jul 1998)

From a letter to Beth Humiston, written by Freda on 5 October 1993, when she was 95 years old: "Memories are sort of pestering my mind right now and this is my old age speaking. I'm so glad I was born to parents of Swiss descent who came to this country, were married in this country, and brought up a big family in this country when it was still kind of new (to them), and I was one of their children born in the U.S.A! I love to remember growing up when we were kids and had the joy of snow and ice, of right and wrong, kids of our own, and finally retiring to a warmer climate to enjoy retirement. Lucky for me, lucky for you!"

Notes from Beth Humiston's interview with her father, Herman Stettler:
"Freda was a tomboy. She could shimmy up a pole in the barn faster than I (Herm) could. She could outrun me and the school kids. She was built for it -- had legs that were all muscle. Not especially pretty. She helped look after Hans (John) and Babe (Walter) when they were babies." Freda and Herm were buddies. They played baseball in the yard and she outdid Herm.
