Hubert J LONDRE
(3 May 1890 - 8 Oct 1967)
Hubert Joseph Londre (Landry)was born May 3, 1891 in Wallace, Menominee, MI near the town of Mellon. He was the son of Francois Xavier Landry 1851-1917 and Marie Katherine (Kate) Bibeau.
The Landry name is an Acadian one. The first French Colony in the New World was in what is not called Nova Scotia. His ancestry goes back to Rene (le Juenne) Landry who was born bet. 1634-1640 in LaVentrouze, France and died at Port Royal, Acadia (Nova Scotia). The Acadians were deported in 1755 all over the colonies and back to Europe when the British took ownership of Acadia which they called Nova Scotia. Many families were broken up. This Landry family (Jean dit Jean Baptiste (Toc) Landry, was deported to Boston. The French Catholic were not welcomed or even expected in the colonies. Living conditions were terrible. Many died on the ships or in the colonies. Some people moved to New Orleans which was then in French hands, this Landry family moved back to Canada and generations lived in the St. Francois du Lac, Yamaska area.
Hubert and his siblings changed the spelling of their names from Landry to Londre. They found the English speaking population did not properly pronounce the name. In Canada it would have the accent on the second syllable and sound like "laun dree" Often people said laundry with the accent on the first syllable. People still pronounced it wrong but has come to be said as "Lahndray" with the accent on the last part.
It was Hubert's Grandfather, Joseph Landry born in St. Francois du Lac in 1816 who came to the United States and lived in Bay Settlement, town of Scott, Brown Co, WI.
Hubert and his wife Rose Venne were 16 when they ran away togeth the get married. They married on Nov 27, 1907 in Iron Mountain, Dickenson, MI. In his early years Hubert working in logging camps as a lumber jack. The couple used to sing duets to the lumber camp in the evenings. Hubert used to play the bones.
Together Rose and Hubert had nine children; M. Rose Blahnik/Frye 1909-1990, Pearl Miller 1911-1995, Lloyd 1912-1989, Wells 1914-1996, Harvey 1916-1980, Lester 1919-1991, Blossom 1921-1990, Clayton 1923-1970 and Ron 1925-1992.
The family spent many years in Northern Wisconsin, upper Michigan and down in the Racine area. Edmund worked as a carpenter in the Neenah, WI area in the 1920's and that was when the family learned to speak English in addition to their native French. Hubert became a carpenter in the 1920's and his daughter Rose had learned English in school. He used to have her translate his blueprints. He and his wife lived for some time in the Racine, WI area where he worked for Hamilton Beach. He had brown hair and gray green eyes. He died Oct 8, 1967 in Racine.
