Roger Neil Kirkpatrick
(6 Oct 1929 - 13 Dec 2017)
Legacy.com printed from www.cagemillsfuneraldirectros.com: Roger went to the Lord early in the morning of December 13, 2017, at the age of 88. Roger was born on the Chapman Ranch on October 6, 1929 to Monroe Curtis Kirkpatrick and Lottie Pearl Kirkpatrick; he was the youngest of four children and the only son. Roger’s older sisters included Kathleen(Cleburne Freeman), Marion(Cyril Love), and Virginia(Lawrence Curry) Kirkpatrick. At age eleven, he and his parents moved to Kerrville where Roger graduated from Tivy High School and received a degree from Schreiner Institute (now Schreiner University). Roger completed his college education at Texas College of Arts & Industries in Kingsville (later Texas A&M-Kingsville), graduating with a BBA in 1952.
Roger entered the United States Air Force upon graduation and was stationed in Japan during the Korean War, making the rank of Staff Sergeant. After his years in the Service, Roger moved back to the Coastal Bend in 1959. After working for an independent CPA, Roger dedicated 28 years to working in the accounting and finance department for the City of Corpus Christi, and earned the title of Senior Accountant. Upon retirement, he worked as the Finance director of St. Luke’s Methodist Church for 10 yrs. Roger was also active in the Boy Scouts of America, Troop 3. He attended too many camp outs and adventures to count, received the Order of the Arrow award, and worked as the troop committee treasurer.
Roger was married to Ava Rae Olson Kirkpatrick, from Corpus Christi, for 49 years and helped raise four children. Roger leaves behind his wife and children: Byron (Bernadette) Kirkpatrick, Audrey Burgess (Dan Beaumont), Ava Lynn (Michael) Storbeck, and Mitchell (Amber) Kirkpatrick; twelve grandchildren: Brandon Muriel, Kristen Burgess; Jacob (Liz Rische), Aaron (Amy), Christopher (Hannah), and William Storbeck; Morgan, Adam, and Aaron Kirkpatrick; Ava June, Evangeline, and Clara Kirkpatrick, and 6 great-grandchildren. Also, beloved niece and nephews; Charlotte McClintock and Richard, Bob and Patrick Love. Roger was an avid reader, fisherman, woodworker, and a master craftsman. Not only did he enjoy the art of fly fishing and saltwater angling he intricately crafted lures, flies, reels, and beautiful hand wrapped fishing rods. He was also a gifted knot-maker, which was so useful with his nautical and scout projects. His love of wood and paper construction led to building kayak’s, go-karts, kites, and endless handcrafted toys to entertain his children and grandchildren.
Roger always had a book to read, loved music, and had an impressive collection of movies and film. Additionally, Roger had a keen sense of humor and loved telling humorous anecdotes, a trait handed down from his sisters and other family members. In other words, the man was a daily almanac for hilarious jokes and the follies of everyday life. He had knowledge about every subject, from mechanics to the ancient art of hokusai. Roger learned the language of old Japanese from his travels, and could work an abacus faster than a calculator. Roger was a man of every talent, and his personality brought joy to all around him. Roger loved his family deeply and we will all miss his creative, joyful, and steadfast heart greatly.
Visitation will be held on Monday, December 18, 2017 at 6:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m. at Cage-Mills Funeral Directors.
