Helen Ernestine Kirkpatrick was born 26 October 1901 in St. Louis, Missouri. She attended Washington University in St. Louis. On 3 June 1922 in St. Louis, she married Harold Alvin Davenport. Harold was a graduate of Washington University Medical School, and in 1926 became a faculty member there. He was later Associate Dean of the Northwestern University Medical School. He retired in 1963.

There were two (2) children born of the marriage.
