Bettie Davenport was born 13 September 1931 at Oak Park, Cook County, Illinois. She earned an M.A. in Music from Northwestern University. She married on 2 January 1953 in Evanston to John Suess. John has a Ph.D. from Yale, and is head of the Musicology Department at Case Western Reserve University in Cleveland, Ohio.

There were five (5) children born of the marriage.

Suess was a diving coach for the Orange High School swim team from 1981 to 1991. During the 1986-87 school year, she also coached divers at Case Western Reserve University. Mrs. Suess, 66, of Pepper Pike, died of complications from a stroke Saturday at Meridia Hillcrest Hospital in Mayfield Heights. She was born in Itasca, Ill., and came to Greater Cleveland in 1968, when her husband, John G., a professor of music, joined the faculty at Case Western Reserve University. They lived in Cleveland Heights before moving to Pepper Pike in 1976. Mrs. Suess earned a bachelor's degree and a master's degree in music composition from Northwestern University. She often assisted her husband in his research of 17th century music. She transcribed music and translated French and Italian lyrics for his published reports. In the 1970s and 1980s, Mrs. Suess wrote articles and took photographs of original furniture designs, which were printed in Workbench magazine. Besides her husband of 45 years, survivors include daughters, Leslie A. Purdy of Reading, Pa., Jessica H. Bayless of Pendleton, Ore., Frederica R. of Champaign, Ill., and Andrea M. Taylor of Boston; son, Lyle A. of Champaign; seven grandchildren; and a sister. Services will be at 4 p.m. today at St. Martin's Episcopal Church, 6295 Chagrin River Blvd., Chagrin Falls 44022. Memorial contributions may be made to the church. Arrangements are by DiCicco & Sons Funeral Home in Mayfield Heights.
