Eliza Hays
(13 Nov 1826 - 7 Apr 1906)
Eliza Hays was the daughter of Robert Hays (1806-1875) and Nancy Parrott (c1806-c1860). She married Thomas Jefferson Engle in Knox Co KY on 23 Feb 1847. The family removed to what is now Gray Hawk, Laurel Co KY before 1849 where Jeff was elected Magistrate of the county and helped form the new county of Jackson in 1858.
During the Civil War, Jeff was commissioned Captain of Co G, 47th KY Mounted Infantry, at Irvine KY on 5 October, 1863. Tragically Jeff died of Typhoid fever within two months of his commissioning. Eliza was left a widow with 3 minor children and received a widow's pension for Jeff's service. Eliza married William Webb on 11 Dec 1866. William proved to be such a good stepfather to Eliza's children that Jeff's youngest son, Thomas Jefferson Engle, named one of his sons William Webb Engle. Provided by S. Engle, Find A Grave Contributor # 48785574.
On the 1880 Census she was living Estill County, Kentucky with her husband William J. Webb and children.
