John Henry Houk

Unknown Nebraska newspaper: John H. Houk, son of James and Nancy Houk, was born at Auburn, Indiana October 10, 1874 and departed this life at Scottsbluff, Nebraska July 20, 1956 at the age of 81 years, 9 months and 10 days.

In the year of 1881, the family moved to Michigan where John received his early schooling and in 1891 he came with his parents to Cozad, Nebr., where he grew to young manhood.

On October 24, 1899, he was united in marriage to Miss Flora McCance at Cozad, and the young couple engaged in farming near the town of Cozad. To this union one daughter was born: Margie who is now Mrs. Merle W. Roberts of Kansas City Missouri.

Flora Houk passed away on May 7, 1909.

On February 12, 1912, Mr. Houk was united in marriage to Ella May Buckley, and the family moved to Paxton, Nebraska where Mr. Houk continued to farm for about two years. To this union two children were born: Earl, who now lives in Scottsbluff, Nebr., and Beulah, who passed away in the year of 1919 [1920] at the age of 4 years.

In the year of 1913, the family moved to Paxton where Mr. Houk was connected with the Farmer's Elevator, and later as maintenance operator for Keith County. In 1942, Mr. and Mrs. Houk moved to Scottsbluff, Nebr. were Mr. Houk was associated with his son, Early [Earl], in the oil and trucking business. Mrs. Houk passed away of a heart attack November 30, 1944. Since that time Mr. Houk has continued to reside in Scottsbluff.

He attended the Methodist Church in Paxton for many years and after moving to Scottsbluff, he became a member of the First Christian Church o that city. Mr. Houk was affiliated with the IOOF Lodge in early life and was awarded his 40 year pin several years ago in recognition of his faithful services to that order.

He was a kind and loving husband and father, a good neighbor and highly respected in the communities in which he lived, both in Paxton and Scottsbluff. e leaves to mourn his passing: his son and daughter, two granddaughters and two grandsons as well as more distant relatives and a host of old time friends and neighbors who, with his family, are grieved at his passing.

Final rites for Mr. Houk were held at the Paxton Methodist church Monday, July 23d at 2 p.m. The Rev. V. R. Daniels officiating. Organist was Mrs. V. R. Daniels. Duet selections by Mr. Ray Wamsley and Mrs. Harold crow were "Someday the Silver Cord Will Break", "Beautiful Garden of Prayer" and "Abide with Me."

Casket bearers were, Ed Osborn, Virgil Eakins, George Steudler, Harry Tripp, Ray Wamsley and John Holmstedt. Honorary pallbearers were Irving Thulin, Ed Wagner, Ali Stendler, Paul Heiser, Swan Monson and F. C. Sudman.

Interment was in the Paxton Cemetery with IOOF Lodge number 344 of Paxton conducting graveside services. Arrangements were in charge of the Bracken Mortuary of Paxton.
