Thomas Hobart Kirkpatrick

Thomas Hobart Kirkpatrick was born 1 February 1861 in Faribault, Rice County, Minnesota. He died 16 December 1913 in Mount Pleasant, Henry County, Iowa while working on the Henry County courthouse. He married Laura May McGavack who was born 21 May 1863, Henry County, Iowa, and died 1 November 1931. They are buried in the Pleasant Hill Cemetery near Mount Pleasant.

On 1880 Census of New London, Henry Co., Iowa Tom Kirkpatrick appears on page 359B with his mother Olive and her husband James W. Smith. There are 3 other children in the household: Frank Smith, age 19, Fred Smith, age 15 and Mary Smith, age 10. Tom's occupation is farmer.
On 1900 Census of Jackson Township, Henry Co., Iowa shows Thomas H. with wife Laura M., and children Arlie A., Dallas H. and Ethel M. Thomas' occupation is farmer as is his son Arlie. It shows Thomas and Laura have been married 17 years. Their 3 children show that they were born in Nebraska.
Mount Pleasant News, Mount Pleasant, Iowa, Monday, December 29, 1913, Page 2, Col. 4: Thomas H. Kirkpatrick. Very unexpectedly Mr. Thomas H. Kirkpatrick, long a resident of this city, passed away at his home on South Jefferson street, Tuesday, December 16, 1913 at 7:15 o'clock. A very few minutes before he seemed to be in his usual health, when suddenly heart failure seized him, and snatched him away from his sorrowing family. He was the son of Hobart and Olive Kirkpatrick, and a grandson of Rev. Thomas Kirkpatrick, well known many years ago in this county as a earnest preacher of the gospel. Deceased was born in Rice county Minn., 1861. July 12, 1881 he and Miss Laura McGavack were united in marriage. Two sons, Arlie A. and Dalton H., and one daughter, Ethel May, all of whom survive with the mother to mourn were born to them. He was converted in Salem, Iowa, in 1895, and was a member of the Methodist church. He was a man to many sterling qualities. He will be greatly missed among his wife circle of friends and acquaintances. Funeral services conducted by Frank E. Weston, pastor of the First Baptist church, Mt. Pleasant were held in the church at Pleasant Hill on Thursday afternoon at 2:30. The text was 1 Sam. 20:3 "There is but a step between me and death." The choir of the sang the hymns. Interment was in the cemetery by the church. The bereaved family have the sympathy of many in their hour of sorrow.
