Thelma Audrain Garner

(16 Jun 1904 - 15 Apr 1930)

Obituary of Thelma Audrain Garner in Unionville Republican 23 April 1930.
The subject of this sketch, Thelma Audrain Garner, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. W. A. Garner, was born in Powersville, Mo., June 16, 1904 and departed this life at sunset on April 15, 1930 being 25 years, 9 months and 29 days old. Besides her devoted parents she leaves two brothers, Keith and Billy Garner of Unionville, Mo., and two sisters, Mrs. Eva Bradshaw and Mrs. Naomi Hamilton of Wichita, Kansas, who will miss her genial presence. The funeral was conducted by the writer in the Christian church of Unionville, April 17, 1930, at 2:30 p.m. in the presence of a large gathering of relatives and friends, after which the body was laid to rest in the city cemetery. The scripture text used by the minister was the language of Jesus, found in John 17:4, "I have glorified Thee on earth, I have finished the work which thou gavest me to do."
The following songs used at the funeral were selected by Thelma and sung by her request, "Have Thine Own Way, Lord, " "Whispering Hope," " When They Ring the Golden Bells" and "Rock of Ages."
The pallbearers were Mortimer Hill, Errett Kent, Lawrence Minks, Paul Hickman, Selden Wiseman and Trusten Mullenix.
Thelma confessed her faith in Christ and took membership with the West Liberty Church of Christ when about ten years old; later she took membership in the Christian church with her parents here in Unionville, where she has held membership for the last nine years---proving herself to be very devout and sweet spirited christian; though handicapped by a serious bronchial affliction she has ever given evidence of her sincere faith in God, manifesting an exemplary spirit of patience during the last 13 years in which she has been afflicted. For years it has known that her affliction was of a serious nature, and everything possible has been done by her parents to restore her health. She even was taken to California and Colorado in the hope that the change in climate might give her relief, but it proved of no avail. Thelma's beautiful spirit of patience and self denial was always shown in her greater concern for the welfare of her friends and loved ones than herself. This beautiful flower of promise was not permitted to remain long in the garden here below, but has been transplanted into the ever-blooming Garden of the Spirit World, where its sweet fragrance of love shall serve to make happy all who may pass that way. [poem] followed by card of thanks from family.
