1900 U. S. Census shows the family at Ekalak Voting Precinct, Custer Co., Montana. Kirk E. age 40 with wife Mary and children Leslie A. , William W., Lucy C., Earl, and Eveline [has female name listed as son]. Mary & Kirk are the parents of 5 all of whom are living at the time of the census.
On the 1920 U. S. Federal Census at Sidney, Richland Co., Montana, Kirk E., his wife Mary and children Netta M., Gertrude B. and Albert C. appear. No one shows any occupation.

Herbert was one of seven children born to Dr. and Mrs. Alvin Herbert, September 18, 1859 at Red Wing, Minnesota. Dr. Herbert was born in 1829 near Sandusky, Ohio, and received his medical degree from Hahnemann Medical College in 1866. He married Nancy Kirkpatrick of Illinois. Kirk Herbert attended school at Red Wing, Minnesota, and Palisade, South Dakota, till 1879. After that he traveled here and there and followed various occupations and for about eight years was on the range in different portions of the West. After this he operated a sawmill in the Black Hills for eight years. In 1896 he moved to Ekalaka, Montana where he remained for four years. In 1900 he took a homestead southeast of the Ridgelawn Stage Stop where he went into the business of farming. On December 16, 1890, he married Mary Belle Stanhope, who was born in Virgil City, Missouri, May 27, 1870. She was educated there and moved to Custer County, South Dakota when 19 years old. Nine children were born to them: Leslie, Willie, Lucy, Evelyn [Evlin] and Earl, twins, Milo, Nettie, Gertrude, and Albert.
Kirk E. Herbert is a 70 year old widower living in the household of his daughter Nettie and son-in-law Richard Williams at School Dist. 21, Richland Co., Montana in 1930. This census was taken April 12, 1930.
