Milford Mail, Milford, Iowa, Thursday, August 18, 1932, Page 1, Col. 1: J. H. Griffith Died Suddenly Monday Morning. He Suffered With Heart Disease at 3 in the Morning. John Henry Griffith, 67 years old, well known Milford resident for more than a quarter of a century, died unexpectedly at 3:30 o'clock last Monday morning at his home.
Word of Mr. Griffith's death came as a shock to the entire community. He had not been ill and except for a slight attack of rheumatism in his right knee, he was in fine health and spirits up to the hour of his death.
His death was caused by heart disease. He woke Mrs. Griffith about 8 'clock Monday morning and told her he was ill. Mrs. Griffith turned on the lights and was shocked when she saw the white pallor of his face. He was perspiring freely and his night clothes were ringing wet. He had a handkerchief in his hands and was mopping his face.
Mrs. Griffith wanted to call a doctor immediately, but the stricken man assured her that he would be all right shortly and went to the kitchen for a drink and sat down to rest in his favorite chair. He told his wife that it was his heart that was bothering, but he felt the attack soon would pass.
After resting awhile in his chair, he retired to bed and apparently dozed off to sleep. Mrs. Griffith remained awake and decided to call a doctor the first thing in the morning. She heard a peculiar sound from her husband and before Wade Griffith, a son living at home, could get to his father's room, he was dead.
Mr. Griffith was a very friendly and genial disposition. He was a friend of every man and admired by all who knew him. He suffered with Spinal meningitis when he was twelve years old. The disease impaired his hearing, which he never regained.
He was born March 11, 1866, at Preston, Ia. After finishing high school he went to a business college in Dubuque, but he had to discontinue his studies thee because his hearing continued to grow worse. After leaving the business college he became a partner of a travelling photographer and his duties were to develop the pictures. He followed that line of work for only a short time, however, and his hearing was the cause.
He was married in Preston to Miss Minnie Myer, May 2, 1894. The couple lived in Preston for several years and then moved to Lake Park, where Mr. Griffith again engaged in the photographic business. He moved to Milford about 29 years ago and has lived here since.
He has followed the trade of painting ever since he has lived here, his son, Wade, working with him.
Besides his widow and son, Wade, he is survived by one other son, Ralph Waldo Griffith of Woodbine, Ia., and two sisters, Mrs. Pearl Oates of Chicago and Mrs. Ruby Truax of Medford, Wis.
The funeral services were held at 2:30 o'clock yesterday afternoon at the B. L. Von Housen chapel. Burial was in Okoboji cemetery. The Rev. Herbert Marsha of Spirit Lake was in charge of the services.
