Eunice Becker

Milford Mail, Milford, Iowa, Thursday, November 14, 1915, Page 1, Cols. 5 & 6: Eunice E. Becker was born March 31, 1837 near Syracuse, N. Y. When five years of age she came with her parents to Quincy, Ill. Three years later the family moved to Will Co. near Chicago, where the father was an Inn Keeper. Later they moved to Elgin and later to Janesville, Wis. and from there to Baraboo, Wis. In 1854 the family came to Iowa, settling near Belview in Jackson Co. She attended the first Institute in Jackson County and became a teacher. Her services were also given as nurse.
On Sept. 3, 1864 she was united in marriage to George Griffith near Preston, where the family resided for thirty nine years. To this union five children were born--one dying in infancy---Frank E. and Henry, of Milford, Pearl Johnson, of Chicago, and Ruby Truax of Hannibal, Wisconsin.
While at Preston the deceased was an active member of the Christian church of Preston. She was a staunch worker in the Ladies Aid and was Superintendent of the Sunday School for ten years.
In 1903 the family moved to Milford, where they have since resided. Wishing to be identified with some Christian denomination she united with the local Congregational Church. She was a member of the local Ladies Aid but on account of poor health has not been able to take any active part.
About four years ago the deceased began to fail and since has made a brave fight to the last which was ended with a most beautiful prayer after which she went to sleep, passing away at 5:30 Monday morning, Nov. 1st at the age of 78 years, seven months and one day.
The funeral services were from the home Wednesday, November 3. Dr. Baker, of the Congregational Church conducted the services. She leaves to mourn her loss her husband, four children and four grandchildren, all being present at the funeral. F. E. Johnson and Grant E. Harper of Chicago; Mr. and Mrs. Geo. Lucas, Joe Maher and Chas. Dayton, of Estherville, besides the children, were present.
