Individual Details
Celia Loucetta Kirkpatrick
(7 Jun 1850 - 15 Nov 1932)
Celia Loucetta Kirkpatrick was born 7 June 1850 at Dodgeville, in Des Moines County, Iowa. She died at Jennings, Louisiana, 21 November 1932. Her husband was Charles Clark Hill whom she married in Wapello County, Iowa, 20 April 1868. Hill was born in Shelby County, Indiana on 27 June 1847 and died 2 April 1928 at Jennings, Louisiana.
The Hills were associated with Celia's brother, Joseph Francis Kirkpatrick and other Kirkpatrick's in the early days, contracting for phases of rail building, particularly on the Katy (the Kansas City and Southern). Charles and Celia moved about, from St Joseph, Missouri to Leavenworth, Kansas to Fort Smith, Arkansas. For a time Hill was in the wheat threshing business. Finally they moved to Louisiana in the late 1880's. They homesteaded a little north of Kinder, Louisiana in Allen Parish, living in a tent until a house could be built. After a time they sold the homestead and moved to Jennings, Louisiana. Charles worked briefly at a bank in Houston, Texas, then returned to Louisiana. He worked as an engineer with steam engines and was employed for many years by an electric power firm. In later years he managed a large pumping plant drawing water from the Louisiana bayous and emptying it into a system of canals and tributaries irrigating expanses of rice fields.
Charles Clark Hill was described as tall and with an appearance "something like an Indian". He was born in Rushville, Indiana, and was the youngest of all the Hill children.
Celia (Kirkpatrick) Hill was a music teacher when she was a young woman. The Hill family was very musical, enjoying evenings around the piano singing or playing musical instruments.
There were six children born of the marriage.
