Tommy was born in Jefferson County, Iowa, 16 April 1848. He married Sarah Gowing in Appanoose County, Iowa, in April of 1870. He died in a hurricane at Galveston, Texas 25 September 1897.

There were eight children born of the marriage.

On the 1880 Census of Polk, Nodaway Co., Missouri he appears as T. A. Kirkpatrick, wife Melissa, children Lora B. and Icee. Mother-in-law is Jane Loveland.
