On the U. S. Census of Ft. Bend County, Texas in 1900 Sarah is listed as a widow, age 47, with her children Elmer, Mabel, Coral, Aleta and Greta. Sarah's occupation is farmer. Elmer's occupation is farmer.
On the 1910 U. S. Census of East Las Vegas Ward, San Miguel Co., New Mexico, Sarah Kirkpatrick appears with her son Elmer D. and daughter Greta P. Sarah is a widow. She is the mother of 8 with 5 still living. They are living on Railroad Avenue and Elmer is a farmer.
On the U. S. Census of 1930, Burnstown, Laramie Co., Wyoming, Sarah M. is listed as head of household, a widow age, 77. She is listed three household's before her son Coral and his family.
Sarah Margaret Gowing was born in Appanoose county, Iowa, September 18, 1852. She died at the home of a daughter in Cheyenne, Wyoming, August 18, 1944, at the age of 91 years, 10 months and 28 days.
On September 5, 1871, she was united in marriage to Thomas A. N. [M] Kirkpatrick. To this union eight children were born.
Mrs. Kirkpatrick has had the distinction of pioneering in three states: Iowa, Nebraska and Wyoming. She came to Nebraska 60 years ago; was in the Galveston, Texas hurricane of 1900 [1897] She and her husband came from Wilcox, Missouri in a covered wagon drawn by a span of mules, settling in Butler county. For a quarter of a century, they made their home in Butler and Seward counties. On Sept. 23, 1897, Mr. Kirkpatrick died, leaving Mrs. Kirkpatrick and the younger children to carry on alone.
At the age of 66, after the first World War, Mrs. Kirkpatrick filed on a homestead near Hillsdale, Wyoming, living on the claim until she proved up on it.
Surviving her passing are three daughters, Mrs. George Crim of Seward, Nebr., Mrs. Mabel Beaver of Cheyenne, Wyo., and Mrs. Greta Blewett of Bloomington, Indiana. There are also 15 grandchildren, including Mrs. Elmer Rousselle of Seward; 22 great grandchildren, and two great great grandchildren. Her husband and five children preceded her in death.
Funeral services were held in Cheyenne, Wyoming, Monday, August 21, 1944, with a short service and committal at the Utica cemetery Tuesday at 10 a.m. with Rev. S. L. McCaig officiating.
Mrs. Kirkpatrick spent some time at the home of her daughter, Mrs. Crim, of Seward, about a year ago.
